Brain Hemorrhage Miracle—Lisa Foto

No one thinks they will wind up in a hospital if they go to a gym to work out, but that is what happened to Lisa Foto.  During a fitness training session, Lisa experienced a ruptured aneurysms that caused a massive brain hemorrhage.  She was immediately rushed to Saddleback Hospital where they determined what had happened.

“They said on a scale of one to five, with five being the most severe, that my brain hemorrhage was a five,” said Lisa.

She needed immediate brain surgery, so Lisa was transferred to Mission Hospital where she would start to receive treatment according to the protocols established by the Adam Williams Initiative (AWI).

The hemorrhage caused Lisa to go into a coma for five weeks, during which time she had other surgeries.  One of which was an extremely delicate process where the neurosurgeon prevented further bleeding by “coiling off” the artery.  She also had a surgery to reduce swelling and pressure to her brain.

Strokes are serious threat to the recovery of patients with Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI).  Lisa was set up with the Licox® Brain Tissue Oxygen Monitoring System, which could predict if a stroke was likely.  Each time it did, she received vasospasm treatments—18 in all—successfully preventing any stroke and dramatically increasing her success rate.

Normally, TBI patients like Lisa have only a 50 percent chance of recovery.

Says Lisa about the AWI protocols, “All of these things have made it possible for me to recover 100%. I am 1 year [and four] months post trauma now and able to ride my horse again. I snow skied this past year, traveled like I used to, pretty much resumed my life as active as it was before but I have a new appreciation for my life and I want to use my experience to help others. I do not have to take seizure medicine anymore and have had no more seizures either. All medical restrictions at the DMV have been lifted by my doctor and he says I am home free now!”

Lisa now volunteers at Mission Hospital by visiting the families of coma patients, giving them support and hope by sharing her life-changing story.
